Ghanouj Had Me At Hello

In need of serious sustenance for minimal outlay, I know that Levantine cuisine is always a reliable option. That’s not to say that it’s always stellar, if not done right it can be lacklustre or even borderline insipid, but when executed correctly, it’s a thing of beauty. So, optimistically hoping for a winner, I turned my hungry eye to this particular purveyor of Middle Eastern wares.
As expected, I had zero issues in securing an abundance of food for what would have, regardless of the quality, amounted to a bargain price. As it would transpire, it was an absolute steal.
Kicking proceedings off were the appetisers - all of which were familiar fare, but each had a uniqueness to them that surprised and impressed in equal measure. Tangy vine leaves, crispy spinach sambosas (that were thankfully devoid of the all-too-often found sourness), moist falafel, and satisfying spiced fries all hit the right notes and made for a strong opening gambit.
Next, the sandwiches - these were all perfectly packed pockets of pure positivity. With light, fluffy pitas tying everything together, there wasn’t a dud among them; though the mixed fried vegetables just about squeaked ahead of the rest to take the most acclaim.
Speaking of which, the plate of fried vegetables was glorious. Probably the best incarnation of this dish I’ve had, it was indulgent greasiness at its finest. Plus, the unexpected bonus of additional hummus accompaniment only served to elevate it further.
In an attempt to bring some lightness to the overall meal, I ordered the fattoush - an act that though filled with earnest intentions, somewhat faltered in reality. Though this is no way a slight on the salad itself, it did indeed bring a welcome freshness as has hoped, it was just that the veritable sack of khubz that came with it rather negated any illusions of levity. (Not that I was mad at this though, they were incredible.)
It wasn’t all completely smooth sailing however, the one aspect of my what I had that didn’t blow me away was the Palestinian foul. While not unpalatable, it wasn’t quite to the same standard as what had preceded it. Fortunately, having saved the delicate, creamy hummus until last, things ended on a real high.
Given this showing, this establishment is going to be very hard to ignore when the urge to feast on Arabian fodder strikes again.
